The last time I attended the multi-day music festival Zakifo was in 2017. The internationally-renowned vibe starter changed location the following year, along with adopting a manageable programme that saw different acts slotted at different venues around the city, allowing for an exploration of the music, and of the lifeline of Duban — its people.
This year sees more innovative programming. The organizers have resorted to a two-weekend schedule, which is exciting for those who would like to see a grouping of similar acts, and not so much if your palate is vast enough to want to experience the whole range.
My eye is fixated on the weekend of the 31st. BET Award-nominated Mr Eazi will provide a taster of his Banku wisdom to eThekwini massive, while Asa shall ensure that the festival ends off on a high with her acoustic incantations. Red Robyn, Beatenberg, Blinky Bill, and Mandla Mlangeni’s TRC will also be serving up their different blends of magic for what seems set to be a fire-filled weekend.
